Cresskill is a borough 25 minutes north of New York City and the George Washington Bridge in Bergen County. Cresskill has a population of around 8,500. The borough has quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods with parks, shops and restaurants, and excellent schools. Cresskill is named after the watercress that grows along Tenakill Brook. It was primarily a farming village until the railroad connected the area to Jersey City and the ferry to New York. Cresskill was home to Camp Merritt, a major debarkation point for troops being sent to World War I. The borough prospered after the railroad came, bringing the largest chicken hatchery in the world. Most of Cresskill real estate was built after WWII to accommodate returning veterans from that conflict.

Cresskill and the surrounding area have a plethora of shopping and dining establishments, from locally owned boutiques to national chains. The borough is home to A. Creative Storefront & Mirror Co., Hamrah’s Clothing, Bully Boy Fine Foods, and Willow Run Nursery. The Shops at Riverside is minutes away, and features Bloomingdale’s, Louis Vuitton, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, Saks Fifth Avenue, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tiffany & Co., Victoria’s Secret, Houston’s, Maggiano’s Little Italy, McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood, Morton’s Steakhouse, P.F. Chang’s, Mr. Cupcake, The Cheesecake Factory, and Smashburger. In nearby Paramus, the Outlets at Bergen Town Center includes J. Crew, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdale’s, Century Twenty-One, Gap, Marshalls, Target, and Whole Foods. Garden State Plaza is home to JCPenney, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and more. Parks and Recreation

Camp Merritt Memorial Monument is Cresskill’s most well known historic marker, and is a traffic circle located at the intersection of Knickerbocker Road and Madison Avenue. The Dutch-style Huyler Homestead, built in 1836 by Peter Huyler, is on the National Register of Historic Places. There are several area parks, including Palisades Interstate Park, Piedmont Park, Brookline Park Add, and Eisenhower Park. Bergen County golf courses include Orchard Hills in Paramus, Overpeck in Teaneck, Darlington in Mahwah, Valley Brook in River Vale, and Rockleigh in Rockleigh. Carolyn R. Schultz Park at 3rd Street Sports Complex includes playgrounds and picnic areas. William Cook Park has three tennis courts, a soccer field, a baseball diamond and a play area. Cresskill’s recreational complex is located along 3 blocks from Madison Avenue and south to the Tenafly line between Third and Fourth Streets. The southern part has a municipal pool. Flat Rock Brook Nature Center has 150 acres and is located on the western slope of the Palisades. Cresskill Performing Arts is a dance theater and fencing studio that offers classes and workshops.


Due to its proximity to New York City, low crime rate, great schools, and amenities, Cresskill real estate includes multi-million dollar homes and properties, many of which are located along East Hill. The aforementioned Rio Vista, Tammy Brook Hills, and Tamcrest Estates are all on East Hill. The borough’s cost of living is higher than the national average. The major arterials are Palisades Parkway, Interstate 95, Routes 501 and 505.
