Tenafly is located on the Palisades just 20 minutes north of New York City and George Washington Bridge in Bergen County. Tenafly is known for its picturesque setting, great schools, and bustling downtown. As of the 2010 Census, Tenafly’s population was 14,488. History

Tenafly is named after the Dutch’s term for “Ten Swamps.” Tenafly joined Palisades Township in 1872 and was incorporated in 1894. The borough’s main industry was farming through the mid-19th century, until the railroad arrived in 1859. Tenafly’s “architectural icon” was Daniel Topping Atwood, whose Country and Suburban Homes received national recognition. Atwood designed the town’s railroad station. Other notable residents have included suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and artists Harvey Dunn and George Inness, Glenn Miller, and Yogi Berra.

Shopping and Dining

Tenafly’s downtown area draws residents from the surrounding boroughs to its clothing boutiques, independent bookstores, jewelers, home and gift stores, and restaurants. Shops include Carol’s of Tenafly Clothing, Celebrity Kids Clothing, Seesaw Clothing Boutique, Issue Clothing Store, Womrath Bookstore, Acorns Bookshop, Charmed Jewelers, Orogio Jewelers, A Gilded Cage, and Petite Paperie. Tenafly’s restaurants offer American, Italian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Middle Eastern, and other global cuisine. Favorites include Tenafly Diner, Café Angelique, Celebrity Bagels, Tenafly Hot Bagels, Tenafly Kosher Deli, Max’s Italian Grill, Segreto Ristorante, Simply Vietnamese, Foova Sushi, Hanami, Tea Garden, Axia Taverna, and Samdan. Tenafly is close to The Shops at Riverside in nearby Hackensack, which features Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn for Kids, The Cheesecake Factory, McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood, Morton’s Steakhouse, and other national chains. The Outlets at Bergen Town Center includes J. Crew, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdale’s, Century Twenty-One, Gap, Marshalls, Target, and Whole Foods.

Parks and Recreation

The borough’s green parks, nature preserves, and other recreational opportunities reflect Tenafly, NJ real estate in its beauty and diversity. Davis Johnson Park & Gardens is a 7+ acre park with gardens and paths, a greenhouse, a gazebo, patios, and flowerbeds. Roosevelt Common has 10 acres and includes tennis courts, walking paths, play areas, skate park, pond, and Theodore Roosevelt Monument. Sunnyside Park has 5.5. acres, with play areas, walking path, and ball fields. Huyler Park is located downtown, next to the Atwood-designed railroad station. The park hosts Memorial Day ceremonies and a summer concert series. Tenafly’s neighborhood parks are Froggy Park on the corner of West Clinton Avenue and Foster Road; Walnut Park on Walnut Drive and Leonard Avenue; and Griffin Park within Roosevelt Common on Riveredge Road. The Municipal Center has artificial turf fields and basketball courts. Tenafly Nature Center offers 52 acres adjoining the 330-acre Lost Brook Preserve. The nature center is home to 50 species of nesting birds, 23 mammals, and 24 animal displays. The John A. Redfield Building has natural history exhibits and live animal displays. Lost Brook Preserve has wooded nature trails. Churchill Nature Preserve has 8 acres of paths and bridges on Churchill Road. Greenbrook Sanctuary is located on the Palisade cliffs and has 165 acres with river views, waterfalls, and a variety of plant and wildlife.

Tenafly Public Schools include Tenafly High School, Tenafly Middle School, Malcolm S. Mackay School, Ralph S. Maugham School, J. Spencer Smith School, and Walter Stillman School. Tenafly’s schools rank in the Top 5 in the state, and its high school was named a Blue Ribbon School. GreatSchools.org have given Tenafly schools its highest ratings. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center serves the community. New Jersey Transit (NJT) provides public transportation. Palisades Interstate Parkway’s exits for Tenafly are Exit 1 in Englewood Cliffs and Exit 2 in Alpine. Interstate 95 is the major arterial to NYC. For commercial air travel, Newark airport or New York’s JFK and LaGuardia are the nearest facilities. Private and commercial planes use the airport in nearby Teterboro.
