Tenafly is a borough in Bergen County, in the New York metro area. Tenafly sits on the Palisades of the Hudson River. The community name derives from Dutch for "garden meadow".

Tenafly takes up 4.4 square miles with a population of 13,806. It is predominately a residential community with a total of 4,897 housing units. Tenafly's street plan and overall development were largely determined by its hills, its valleys and its tall trees, which have given the borough its special charm.
Since it became a Borough, Tenafly has been governed by a Mayor and Council who are chosen through partisan elections. The Mayor is the chief executive officer and the six Council members handle legislative functions. The Municipal Center located at 100 Riveredge Road is the seat of Tenafly's government.

The Board of Education is the policy-making body of the school district. The Superintendent of Schools is the Board's chief executive officer responsible for administering the entire school system. The Tenafly Public Schools serve students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district operates four K-5 elementary schools (Mackay School, Maugham School, Smith School and Stillman School), Tenafly Middle School for grades 6-8, and Tenafly High School for grades 9-12. Students from Alpine attend Tenafly High School as part of a sending/receiving relationship. The United States Department of Education awarded Tenafly High School a Blue Ribbon School Award at a special assembly to the Tenafly High School Community on September 20, 2005. Tenafly was the only high school in New Jersey and one of 38 public high schools in the U.S. to receive the 2005 Blue Ribbon School Award.

Fine schools, quality housing, recreational facilities, parks and woodlands, good cultural programs, diverse houses of worship, and quality borough services all help to attract newcomers to and keep older residents in this historic town.

TRANSPORTATION

Trolley Shuttle
The service provides transportation to and from the commuter bus lines in the morning and evening rush hours as well as service into the downtown for shopping and dining. The vehicles were funded by the federal government and provided through NJ Transit. The two replica trolleys operate on fixed routes as shown below. These schedules are subject to future change based on ridership demand.
