Though not yet into its second century, Demarest projects an old-fashioned warmth, charm and cohesiveness of spirit uncommon in even the most established communities. Many residents participate in one or more of the borough's recreational and cultural activities. The OCCC School of Art is an art school and community cultural center established in 1974, housed in an air-conditioned former church building constructed 125 years ago. They teach 45 arts and crafts classes a week for adults and children, and offer special intensive workshops and seminars for professionally oriented students. Others volunteer for the garden society, fire department, or ambulance corp.
Even Demarest's library is privately supported. This sense of community spirit can be seen among Demarest's older citizens as well as its youth. Demarest's center is the picturesque duck pond, town gazebo, and railroad station. Woodlands surround the borough, and that rural beauty has not been sacrificed to further town development. No industry is permitted. Bus service to mid-town Manhattan is available. |

County Road Elementary School
This elementary school caters to students from Kindergarten to the first grade. Reviews from parents indicate that with just 3 grades and 7 classrooms, the place has the feel of a private school. The student to teacher ratio is noted to be at 18:1 in this school.
Luther Lee Emerson Elementary School
This elementary school caters to approximately 200 students and has approximately 15 full time teachers. The student to teacher ratio at Luther Lee is 11.3. The school enjoys a good rating and has been ranked 62 out of 1259 New Jersey Public elementary Schools. Besides academics, the school is renowned for its academic contests, basketball and band.
Middle School
Located in Demarest, this is the only middle school of the region. It caters to over 300 students from grades 5 to 8. As per greatschools.org, the independent school rating site, this school received rating of 9 out of 10. The approximate ratio of students to teachers here is 15:1.

The Demarest Swim Club consists of two large pools, a children’s pool, volleyball court, dressing rooms with showers, two picnic areas with tables , a snack bar, all within six acres of landscaped grounds. The facility is well supervised by a trained pleasant staff, in a very private setting. Throughout the season there are various social activities for children and adults and there is ample opportunity to become acquainted with other Demarest residents and sponsored guests.

GARDEN CLUB
Demarest Garden Club, located in Bergen County, NJ
Monthly Programs: In addition to learning from each other, we invite local and regional experts to give garden-related programs, slide presentations and demonstrations.
Activities: During the year we run garden-related workshops. We also volunteer at our two major ongoing civic projects: the Davies Arboretum and the plantings at the Historic Demarest Railroad Station, Outings, Davies Arboretum, Floral Design, Conservation, Garden Therapy, Plant Sale.

SENIOR CITIZENS
Demarest Senior Center
All activities are held at the Railroad Depot. We welcome all residents and neighbors ages 55 and above. Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Friday of the month. All activities except Arts & Crafts will be held daily except Tuesday from 1-4:30pm. A monthly trip to Atlantic City is held on the third Tuesday of each month at a cost of $25.00. The trip departs from the United Methodist Church.
The Demarest Senior Citizens Club meets the second and fourth Fridays of the month at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. Refreshments are served at the meetings. All citizens of Demarest who are 60 years young and older are invited to join the club. |

About Appraisals >Lender Appraisal
Many sellers think that the price of their home is determined solely by what they are willing to accept and what the buyer is willing to pay. However, there is one more variable that can affect the sale of a home assuming that a bank loan is involved -- the lender's appraisal.
To protect the interest of their investors, the buyer's mortgage lender hires a licensed appraiser to give an independent, objective opinion of what the property is worth. The appraiser compares the house with similar homes in the neighborhood that have recently sold. Square footage, amenities and the condition of the home are taken into account. Renovations and home improvements made by the seller usually add value to the home, while defects such as needed repairs or code violations decrease the property's value. The seller's real estate agent can provide the appraiser with up-to-date information about neighboring homes that have sold to support the seller's asking price.
