 Situated on the Hackensack River and only four miles from the George Washington Bridge, Teaneck is a diversity-friendly community with a broad spectrum of cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Of note is a heritage that includes being the first community in the country to vote to integrate its school system. Within its boundaries are to be found a large variety of ethnic restaurants while more than 25 languages are spoken in the school district. In recent years the tradition of flying the flags of the birth countries of graduating high school seniors featured more than 60 flags. Among its 40 places of worship are Bahai Temple, Unitarian and Christian Churches, Synagogues and two Eruvs, an Islamic Mosque, Syrian Orthodox Church and Ethical Culture Society, to name a few. Teaneck has sought to control development through the establishment of a "greenbelt" along Route 4, earning it the appellation of scenic corridor from the state. Teaneck has many distinct neighborhoods, ranging from elegant Tudors and stone mansions to modest Cape Cods and starter homes. The older style housing stock of pre-war Tudor and Colonial homes adds to the attractiveness of the town as does the lively appeal of its main commercial avenue, Cedar Lane. There are, additionally, three other business districts and one 50-acre multi-use development, Glenpointe, serving this community of almost 40,000 within its 6.2 square miles. Holy Name Hospital, a major medical facility, is located in Teaneck. With centers in cancer care, cardiovascular services, dialysis treatment, women's health care, and neurology services, plus a host of other state-of-the-art diagnostic, treatment, and health management services, Holy Name Hospital provides high quality health care that extends from prevention through treatment and on toward recovery and wellness. Fairleigh Dickinson University, the largest private university in New Jersey is an independent, non-sectarian, coeducational institution. The Teaneck Campus, in a relaxed suburban setting, includes more than 50 academic majors serving mor than 4,000 undergraduates and there are 1,600 students enrolled in nearly 50 graduate programs. The campus is known for innovative interdisciplinary programs and strong career focus in leading business, professional, science, and health care programs. Teaneck schools include Bryant School (Pre K-K), Hawthorne Elementary School (1-4) Lowell Elementary School (1-4) and Whittier Elementary (1-4). There are two Middle Schools; Benjamin Franklin School and Thomas Jefferson School. Teaneck High School offers more than 125 courses with a broad range of electives. Teaneck Recreation- the many parks and playgrounds include supervision in the summer, Movies in the Park, musical concerts, roller skating, swimming and tennis. The Richard Rodda Community Center offers seasonal programs for Youth Division and Senior Citizens.
Express bus service to New York City via the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln Tunnel is available. Today, Teaneck continues to thrive by respecting its residents' many and diverse voices while working towards a blending of interest so all are at home and welcome here.
