One of the most attractive towns in Bergen County, noted for its excellent schools and small town charm, Tenafly was originally settled in the 1800's by the Dutch. The railroad, in the center of the town, was the impetus for its development in the 1870's. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the rebel suffragette, became a resident in 1869 and fellow feminist activist, Susan B. Anthony, joined her a few years later.
Today, the town is mostly residential, with a compact business area featuring a historical Victorian railroad station which houses the highly popular Cafe Angelique. There is a "old style" movie theater with near-by coffee shops such as the Cactus Juice & Coffee Shop and Ken's Northwest Sushi and Juice Bar. Housing ranges from old Victorians to ranches, from colonials to contemporary homes. The town of Tenafly with a population if iver 13,000 people has a median household income of approximately $91,000.
Tenafly's school system includes four primary schools (grades K-5) J.Spencer Smith, Walter Stillman, Malcolm Mackay and Ralph Maugham in addition to a middle school (grade 7 and 8) and a high school, which boasts a broad range of advanced placement and honors courses. The average SAT scores for Tenafly students is 551 verbal and 602 in math. Other schools in Tenafly are; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, The Montessori House Pre-School and the Spring School.
Transportation - There is direct bus service to New York, as well as points in South Jersey. Route 9W puts the community within minutes of the George Washington Bridge, the approach to town along East Clinton Avenue winds through woodlands and luxury homes. There is no train service.
Tenafly Recreation offers a wide variety of instructional programs for all ages and seasonally themed special events. It offers youth sports programs such as Football, Wrestling, Girls Softball, and Travel Basketball. They also hold seasonal sports clinics for grades K - 2 and Start Smart, a nationally acclaimed early childhood sports development program. Additionally, they offer a fully licensed, well structured six week summer camp that is filled with fun activities. The newly built skate park, located at the Roosevelt Common, opened in-line skating enthusiasts of all ages. Throughout the year special bus trips are offered to Atlantic City, skiing at Shawnee Mountain, the circus, and much more. Tenafly has 12 tennis courts with available lessons and features two popular municipal pools. Included with the many playgrounds and parks, there is also the beautiful Davis Gardens with annual flowers and other botany and the Tenafly Nature Center with hiking trails, ponds.
The Tenafly Senior Center, located at 20 S. Summit St is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm and welcomes older adults from Tenafly and other Bergen County towns. The center offers a full weekday program of activities for adults age 55 and older. They include: Tai Chi, Folk Dance, Foreign Language Conversation, Creative Writing, Monthly Book Club, English as a Second Language, Aerobics & Strength Training, Scrabble Club, Bridge Choral Singing, Crafts, Monthly Saturday Movie Club. The center also offers: Trips, Luncheons, Health Screenings, Educational Programs and Musical Entertainment. A qualified staff is available to provide information to family members and older adults about community resources that may be helpful to them.
The Tenafly Public Library is a community center for learning, culture and entertainment. With on-site access to over eighty-thousand books, compact discs, DVD, videos, books on tape and magazine, the Tenafly Library also offers children's programs, lectures, sideshows, discussion group and art exhibit.
The Jewish Community in Tenafly is a thriving social force in the area with a large Israeli influence. The Jewish Community Center on the Palisades (JCC) located atop the East Hill, is a non-profit social service agency serving 3,000 families and 1,000 senior adults and singles in Bergen County. Members enjoy full use of indoor/outdoor swimming pools, tennis, racquetball and squash courts, gyms, indoor track and state of the art fitness center. Members can also enroll their children in the JCC's nursery school, kindergarten and after school programming,summer camps and year round sports programs.
Houses of Worship - Temple Sinai of Bergen County has a religious school that nurtures a dynamic Reform Jewish Community that embraces the Brit (covenant) between God and the Jewish people through the study of Torah, Hebrew, ritual ceremonies and Ethics. Just across the street is the modern Orthodox Synagogue Kesher, serving the communities of Englewood and Tenafly which provides and includes, warm and participatory atmosphere conducive to serious religious expression and meaningful community building. Located in the center of Tenafly and reaching out to all the Jewish families in Bergen County with social and communal activities is the Chabad House, established just five years ago, has a vibrant synagogue, a nursery, a host of services to the community and many events throughout the year.

Carmel Roman Catholic Church, The Presbyterian of Tenafly, St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church, St Thomas Armenian Church, Bergen County Society of African Missions, Tenafly Methodist Church and Trinity Lutheran Church.
